What is Estate Planning?
Your estate is comprised of everything you own: your house, your car, your bank accounts, and your personal property. Life insurance benefits are part of your estate, too. Your estate may be large or it may be small. Regardless of the size, you can’t take it with you when you die.
Basic estate planning is making a plan in advance and naming whom you want to receive your property after you die. However, good estate planning includes much more:
- Instructions for passing your values, not just your valuables
- Instructions for your care if you become disabled before you die
- Name a guardian and a financial caretaker for minor children
- Provide for the transfer of your business at your retirement, disability, or death
- Provide for loved ones who might be irresponsible with money or who may need future protection from creditors or divorce
If you don’t have an estate plan, the State of Florida has one for you. However, you may not like it. The plan is “one size fits all.” The State’s plan may or may not work for you and your family, but it does not take into account your family’s individual needs and values.
Knowing that you have a properly prepared plan in place will give you and your family peace of mind. Estate planning is one of the most thoughtful and considerate things you can do for your loved ones.
